Gastric Bypass Surgery for Diabetes Remission

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco showed a significant advantage for gastric bypass surgery, with improvement of diabetes in 76% of patients compared with 50% for laparoscopic banding (lap band) in some cases the individuals were not obese but over weight.

How the Surgery Causes Diabetes Remission

Resolution of diabetes was defined as achievement of glycemic control without medications; diabetes was considered to be improved if medication doses were reduced by more than 50%.The bypass surgery they performed was not a strict Roux-en-Y procedure. Instead, it also included a duodenum exclusion. Sleeve gastrectomy is a simple restriction procedure that limits the amount of food patients can eat, with no duodenal exclusion.”

Conclusion

When a diabetic loses weight it can have, a positive impact on the amount of medications needed to manage the diabetes. With gastric bypass surgery, the diabetic has a smaller stomach to aid in less eating and weight loss as well as the types of food that can be consumed. Gastric bypass surgery opens a door to diabetes remission for many diabetics and at the very least better control over their diabetes.
