It takes more time to preheat the oven than it does to prepare this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole-wheat pita*
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp pasta sauce
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp Parmesan cheese
  • 2 thick slices mozzarella cheese (1/2 cup shredded)
  • Toppings of choice: sausage, pork, turkey, chicken, mushrooms, etc. (optional)

*Chef's suggestion: Joseph's Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Pita

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 450 F.
  2. Poke pita bread with a toothpick. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in pre-heated oven for 4-5 minutes or until it just starts to crisp.
  3. Remove pita from oven, then increase heat to 475 F.
  4. Drizzle pita with olive oil, and even it out with a pastry brush. Spoon pasta sauce evenly over pita, then sprinkle with dried oregano and Parmesan cheese. Top with mozzarella cheese and add toppings of choice (optional). Bake until cheese is melted and bubbly.
