Goggles Said To Prevent Diabetes

An Australian firm says that their Re-timer goggles can help prevent pre-diabetics from becoming diabetic when worn for a few minutes each day. The goggles shine a bright light into the eyes which helps the body's regulatory systems in hormone release. Trials are underway to prove this theory.

The idea is simple: the bright light emitted into the eyes regulates the body's natural "clock" (circadian rhythm), which in turn, regulates the release of some hormones. Those hormones include those which regulate blood sugar levels. In the case of the Re-timer goggles, the best time is in the morning, scientists believe.

Trials are underway to find out if the goggles will work.

A human trial has begun. It involves patients with pre-diabetes who will wear the goggles for an hour each morning for four weeks. During the trial, the effects on glucose and insulin in the patients' blood will be measured. It's expected that positive changes will result from the light.

The goggles theory is based on previous studies showing that bright light therapy can improve pre-diabetic conditions. A recent study in the Journal of Biological Rhythms, cited by researchers testing the goggles, rounded up many of those studies on bright light therapy.

The new trial for the Re-timer goggles is taking place at the Northwestern University Hospital in the United States. The goggles have already been tested as a potential treatment for seasonal affective disorder and sleep problems.
