Study Says Weight Loss In a Year Predicts Diabetic Improvement

A new study has found that patients with diabetes who lose at least 7 percent of their body fat and keep it off for a year are more likely to sustain that weight loss five years later and have improved cardiometabolic profiles. This in turn improves diabetic outcomes.

The researchers analyzed the Joslin Diabetes Center's intensive lifestyle intervention program, which seeks to improve weight loss and physical activity levels in diabetic patients.

This study showed that real-world clinical outcomes can be found with sustained weight loss.

“This is the first study to show that, in real-world clinical practice, patients with diabetes and obesity can lose and maintain significant amount of weight loss for 5 years by nonsurgical intervention,” said Osama Hamdy, MD, PhD, FACE, medical director of the obesity clinical program and director of the inpatient program at Joslin Diabetes Center. Hamdy and his colleagues analyzed data from 129 patients with obesity and type 1 or 2 diabetes enrolled in the intensive weight loss program.

In addition, the study found that patients who maintained weight loss and resulting benefits saw a decrease in insulin use. The researchers believe that the implications of long-term weight loss on total health care and diabetes-related costs should be further explored.
