Compound in Brocolli Could Help Treat Type 2 Diabetes

New research suggests that a compound found in broccoli could help to slow and potentially reverse type 2 diabetes. The compound is found in several vegetables and can turn down the expression of genes that lead to diabetes and its continuance.

The compound, sulforaphane, is found in most cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cabbage.

Findings were the result of research into a network of 50 genes associates with diabetes.

The findings of the study were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine and was conducted in Europe at the University of Gothenburg. To finalize the study and pinpoint sulforaphane as the treatment, researchers concentrated it from a broccoli sprout extract and gave it to obese patients. Some were at high risk of becoming diabetic while others were already mildly diabetic. The compound was shown to improve the patients' ability to control glucose levels and lower glucose production.

Glucose levels also affect other disease risks such as coronary artery disease and can eventually cause nerve damage and blindness in untreated diabetics.

The next step will be to study the use of sulforaphane or dietary recommendations as treatment options for pre-diabetics and diabetics. This could become especially beneficial for the 15 percent of diabetics who cannot take metformin due to kidney issues.
