New Pill "Cures" Diabetes

Researchers have found that a pill containing common gut bacteria (aka "probiotics") can shift the regulator of glucose levels from the pancreas to the upper intestine. This "rewiring" of the body could transform diabetic treatments.

The pill's treatment affects both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The researchers, lead by professior John March of Cornell University in New York, engineered a mutual strain of human gut bacteria called Lactobacillus. This helps conceal peptide, a hormone that discharges insulin in response to food.

The probiotic improved diabetic responses in rats.

The pill was then given to diabetic rats over a 90-day period. The blood glucose levels of the rats were much improved over rats that did not receive the pill. Examination showed that the rats seemed to be converting upper intestinal cells to act much like pancreatic cells in secreting insulin for glucose regulation.

"One of the things that's beneficial about probiotics is that they're generally observed as safe by the Food and Drug Administration," the professor said. "They're already available, people are already taking them, and they haven't had any hostile side effects."

Lactobacillus is already used to treat diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, and some skin problems.
