A Vaccine May Reverse Type 1 Diabetes

A vaccine that has been around for over 80 years and costs about $15.00 a shot may be able to reverse type 1 diabetes! The vaccine is called bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) it is currently used to treat bladder infections and tuberculosis.

The vaccine was first tested in lab mice and found to permanently reverse type 1 diabetes in the mice. Dr. Denise Faustman is quoted as saying, "We got rid of bad white blood cells, and the pancreas regenerates so they self-healed."

Clinical Studies on Humans

For the past two and a half years, type 1 diabetics have been going to Massachusetts General Hospital to receive the vaccination. It is not clear at this point in time if a single shot will reverse the type 1 diabetes or if the patient will need a series of shots.

This could certainly be good news for type 1 diabetics if you are interested in participating in the clinical trials you can send an email to the following address. DiabetesTrial@partners.org
