Miss Michigan Competes in Miss USA Pageant Wearing Blood Glucose Monitor

The Miss USA Pageant this year was a bit different. One of the participants, Miss Michigan USA Krista Ferguson, competed with a visible glucose monitor. Ferguson's Dexcom patch was fully visible on her arm during the pageant as a statement about diabetes and because, as the contestant points out, she is not ashamed of her type 1 diabetes.

Ferguson was diagnosed at age 22 when a hospital visit for a different problem found her glucose levels to be very high. Doctors believe that she had been untreated for years since type 1 is normally found in late childhood.

"I don't want anyone to feel pity for me, but this is my platform."

Ferguson says that the diagnosis for diabetes explained a lot of symptoms she'd had through her teenage years. Upon diagnosis, she'd considered ending her competition in beauty pageants, but decided to continue on. She now believes that she can help better the image of diabetics by showing that it's a disease affecting all types of people.

Ferguson is proud of her night at the Miss USA Pageant and, though she didn't win, believes that she improved the image diabetics have globally. She has not announced plans to continue competition. Miss USA 2017 is Kara McCullough of Washington, D.C.
