Diabetes In Kids Complicated By Asthma

As if learning to live with diabetes is not enough for a child to have to endure, a recent study points out the complications that asthma can bring to these children who are struggling to control their condition.

The research, which was published in the journal Pediatrics, was based on data collected from over 1,700 children with type 1 diabetes, and 311 who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The study covered the period between 2002 and 2005.

The information showed that approximately 11 percent of the children had both diabetes and asthma. For these children, their average hemoglobin A1C levels were 7.8, while the children who did not have asthma had levels averaging 7.5. Hemoglobin A1C represents the long-term control of blood glucose.

When compared to the participants who did not have asthma, the children who had both asthma and type 1 diabetes were at a 37 percent increased risk of having poor glucose control.

According to the study; “Among youth with type 1 diabetes, asthma is associated with pool glycemic control, especially if asthma is untreated.”

Researchers also found that certain asthma medications made a significant positive impact on blood sugar levels. The study showed that out of the children who experienced both asthma and type 1 diabetes, and were given daily leukotriene modifiers as a treatment, 72 percent of them experienced excellent control of their blood glucose levels.

The researchers believe that the inflammation associated with untreated asthma makes it much more difficult for diabetics to properly manage their blood glucose levels.
