How an Endocrinologist Can Help You Manage Diabetes

Treating diabetes starts with your primary care physician, but, at some point, you may benefit from working with an endocrinologist. An endocrinologist, while schooled in basic internal medicine, is also specially trained in treating hormone imbalances to help the body regulate activities that affect energy, metabolism, reproduction, and other key areas.

Diabetes and Endocrinology

One of the most common conditions that endocrinologists treat is diabetes. Since insulin is a hormone that affects major organs and bodily systems, endocrinologists can help patients balance insulin levels and control blood sugar. Overall, this prevents further complications with diabetes as well as keeping it from exacerbating or causing other serious conditions, like heart disease or obesity.

Finding an Endocrinologist

Your primary care doctor should be able to refer you to an endocrinologist, but you can also find one simply by searching for this type of physician in your area. Ideally, you'll want to work with both your regular doctor and the endocrinologist so you can synchronize your treatment plans and make sure both doctors' protocols are working to improve your health.

When to See an Endocrinologist

Some people may be able to treat diabetes under the care of their doctor, but others who have conditions affecting the thyroid, certain cancers, high blood pressure, or women going through menopause might benefit more from working with an endocrinologist.

If your diabetes symptoms aren't improving or you're suffering from chronic fatigue, too, an endocrinologist might be able to better help you regain your health.

Endocrinologists have special training in being able to recognize specific problems related to diabetes, like kidney disease or vision problems. They're also experienced in helping diabetics create sound diet plans and exercise regimens for the best outcomes.
