Frequent Weighing Prevents Extra Pounds

Even though the holidays are in full swing, stepping on the scale is still a good idea if you want to prevent weight gain, new research suggests.

A recent study published in PLoS ONE found that frequency of weigh-ins can impact weight: the more often you step on the scale, the more weight you're likely to lose.

Additionally, participants who went more than a week without weighing themselves ended up gaining weight, the study found.

"The more often you weigh yourself, the more weight you lose," said lead author Elina Helander, from Tempere University of Technology in Finland.

Weigh in on Wednesdays

Co-author Brian Wansink, Director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, explained that most people see natural weight fluctuations throughout the week, with the lowest weight usually occurring mid-week.

"The bottom line is: If you want to lose weight, it's best to weigh yourself every day," Wansink said. "But if you weigh yourself only once a week, do it on Wednesday because that will give you the most accurate reading."
