Air Pollution Linked to Heart Problems In Women With Type 2 Diabetes

The quality of the air you breathe might be an important factor when it comes to heart health - especially if you're a woman with type 2 diabetes.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association Report found that air pollution was linked to an increased risk for heart problems in women with type 2 diabetes.

Women without the condition only had a "small" risk of developing cardiovascular disease, the researchers reported.

"We didn't expect diabetes to be the strongest factor in determining susceptibility," study lead author Jaime E. Hart, Sc.D., from the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard Chan School.

Limiting exposure

The risk of developing heart problems also increased if the women were over the age of 70, were obese or if they were living in the northeast or the southern regions of the U.S.

An average woman who was exposed to a 10-microgram per cubic meter increase in air pollution (comparable to the difference in air quality between Los Angeles and St. Louis) had a 44 percent higher risk of developing heart disease.

"Continuing to identify subgroups that are most susceptible to the effects of air pollution is critically important for setting pollution standards and regulations so that those who are most vulnerable can be protected," Hart said.

Limiting exposure to pollution is possible by not smoking, eating healthy and getting regular exercise, Hart concluded.
