Study Says Diabetes Causes More Death Than Previously Believed

A new study suggests that diabetes may cause many more deaths than it's been credited for. The study focused on U.S. adults between 1997 and 2010. The study found that about 12 percent of deaths in the U.S. can likely be attributed to diabetes versus the previously-estimated number of just 3.3 percent.

The study looked at National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the National Health Interview Survey and followed on that with a mortality survey. "We argue diabetes is responsible for 12 percent of deaths in the U.S., rather than 3.3 percent that death certificates indicate," lead study author Andrew Stokes of the Boston University School of Public Health said in an interview.

Study findings on diabetic mortality rates were about the same, no matter which survey was used.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey returned estimates of about 11.8 percent of deaths being attributable to diabetes. The National Health Interview Survey found about 11.5 percent could be attributed to diabetes. When respondents were filtered for obesity, obese respondents had a 19.4 percent mortality rate that could be attributed to diabetes.

The study's authors conclude that these numbers indicate that a much larger percentage of Americans may be dying of diabetes than previously believed. They suggest that more robust diabetic prevention and care maybe warranted as a result.
