I experienced the same, and I traced it to drinking something that had Fructose in it at bedtime, as fructose stays in the body longer than sugar. I also take herbs to lower my blood sugar: Gymnema Sylvestre, Fenugreek, Glucommanan, Cherry Extract, etc. This is along with all my other vitamins & supplements. I take 4 caps of each herb twice a day. You might also want to take an extra amount of Glucommanan caps with your dinner. It is a fiber that bulks up with water, and it slows down the digestion of your food, so it helps to avoid sugar spikes. I buy all my products from swansonvitamins.com as they seem to have the lowest prices. In addition, make sure your last meal of the day is either non-starchy veggies and or protein -no starches, grains, flours, or carbs. Good luck!
Your medication regimen could be the culprit....It depends on what you are taking and when. For example, if your blood sugars are great at bedtime and then you go to bed,then your liver is generally dumping out glucose during the night. This leads to elevated glucose levels in the morning. This is referred to as "dawn phenomena" and can be treated with stronger meds or meds that stay in the body longer. Also, if you eat supper kind of early in the evening and don't eat a snack at bedtime then your liver often dumps glucose because it thinks you need a boost of glucose. A bedtime snack can sometimes fix this problem. Not a large bedtime snack but something b/w 15-30 grams of carb...usually a protein with a carb is sufficient. If you avoid carbs all together, then you will definitely wake up with elevated glucose levels. A moderate snack is best. Good luck to you and if this doesn't fix you, speak with your physician and he/she could adjust medication for you.
