New Bluetooth Dose Tracker Fits Most Insulin Pens

A new Bluetooth insulin dose tracker is on the horizon. Called Insulog, it is designed to help people with diabetes avoid dosing errors, and is compatible with most of today’s insulin pens.

Insulog’s startup team is based in Tel Aviv and headed by Menash Michael who has had type 1 diabetes for 30 years. After requiring emergency assistance for an accidental insulin overdose in 2013, Michael decided to help himself and others track insulin use. He started his company that same year to design and build a device that would automatically log insulin data.

The company’s revised prototype, which came out in April, 2016 is equipped with a battery that lasts five to six days, and snaps onto a variety of disposable insulin pens, including Kwikpen, Flexpen, Solostar, and FlexTouch.

The device carries sensors that are sensitive to the insulin pen’s dial, and records the insulin units selected. When Insulog is activated for the next injection, it displays data from the earlier administration, and how much time has passed since it was given. This information can help people avoid dosing errors, improve their A1Cs, and may reduce high and low glucose episodes.

Using Bluetooth technology an injection history is easily created by transferring the dosage data to a mobile app, where pre and post-injection glucose levels can also be recorded. This synchronization with an app is what sets Insulog apart from other current tracking devices. The app is free for iOS and Android.

With a patent pending, the Insulog team is relying on a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo to finance production, and is currently halfway to their goal. Those interested can see the device and learn more about it at Insulog’s Indiegogo page (link below).
