A diabetic has a greater risk of cardiovascular disease than a non-diabetic does. Recent tests that target the lipids that cause cholesterol can give diabetics a jump-start on reducing their cholesterol levels before they become too high and increase the cardiovascular risk even more.
About the VAP Test
The VAP test is a detailed lipoprotein test that is more advanced than the regular lipids panel that is used to measure a persons cholesterol levels. Coble a researcher at Canyons Medical Center offers the following information about standard lipids test.
The VAP Test includes Lp(a) and reports all three lipoprotein parameters LDL, non-HDL and apoB considered necessary by the expert consensus guidelines issued by the American Diabetes Association.
"Standard lipid tests miss more than half of all at-risk patients, and may actually underestimate the number of lipoprotein particles that can lead to atherosclerotic plaques," Cobble said. "When it comes to diabetic patients, the standard test simply doesn't give us enough data to make the best decisions for our patients."
The test is not only affordable but is offered all over the country. Researchers suggest all diabetics have this simple blood test drawn to prevent problems in the future.
