Most diabetics know how important it is to take care of their feet. Foot ulcers are not only extremely painful but can lead to an amputation in extreme cases. If you have been recently diagnosed with diabetes you really need to know how to care for your feet.

How to Prevent Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Prevention is your best weapon against diabetic foot ulcers. Check your feet everyday to make sure there are no blisters, torn skin or cuts. To keep feet safe from blisters, torn skin and cuts, always wear socks that promote good circulation and comfortable shoes that fit properly.

If you spend a lot of time sitting develop a habit of wiggling your feet and toes; this will help with the circulation. Wash your feet daily and be dry them well -- pat them dry instead of rubbing which can lead to ulcerations.

Another good tip is to cut toenails after you finish bathing. When they are soft you are less likely to cut the skin surrounding the toenails. Professional pedicures are also an option.

If you develop even a small foot ulcer, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible for treatment. Your best strategy is to take excellent care of your feet!
