Diabetes Also Affects the Spouse

Some people do not realize how stressful it can be when your spouse has diabetes. Of course, the diabetic has a difficult enough time with managing their diabetes and maintaining a good quality of life. Not only is diabetes stressful for the diabetic but also for the spouse and in some cases older children are also affected.

Depression is the Main Concern

Often times when a person who is diagnosed with diabetes they become depressed this is especially true with older adults. The spouse must now take on more responsibilities. Trying to help their diabetic spouse with their diabetes and with depression can be very challenging. It can and does often cause the spouse to become anxious stressed and depressed as well.

The diabetes is just as new to the spouse as it is to the diabetic. It is a major lifestyle adjustment and of course, spouses worry about each other anyway then you toss in diabetes and the worries skyrocket.

Conclusion

Both the diabetic and the spouse may require emotional care and treatment. Doctors feel they need to pay more attention to the spouses now than they did in the past when they did not realize and research was not available to prove that the spouse is also greatly affected by the diabetes.
