$50K Raised for Diabetic Research – Walk This Weekend
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is $50,000 richer because of the efforts of Accident Fund Holdings, Inc. PR Newswire announced on August 2, 2012 that the company’s employees are the ones to thank for the donation.

According to the report, the company is impelled to support JDRF because of the staggering statistics of those suffering with diabetes, as well as personal experience with the disease. According to JDRF,

“Each year, more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the United States- that's 40 children a day. Children with Type 1 diabetes face a lifetime of blood tests, restrictive diets and the constant threat of devastating complications including kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack and stroke.”

Getting the Job Done

The employees set a goal of $45,000 and were willing to meet that goal using any creative means possible. They had several types of “donate to dress down” days, including days to wear jeans or flip-flops. They sold popcorn and certain employees even pledged to cut off their hair when the donation total passed a certain threshold. Said CEO Liz Haar:

"The activities our employees have participated in have had a direct impact on our fundraising goal while also allowing them to engage with each other in an entertaining way. I am very proud of our employees, as they alone have raised and donated more than $30,000 as well as volunteering to help with fundraising activities."

But Wait… There’s More

As a finale to their fundraising efforts, Accident Fund Holdings, Inc. and more than 100 of its employees, and their friends and family members, will walk in the 2012 East Lansing Walk to Cure Diabetes. It will take place this Saturday, August 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Michigan State University.
