On December 29, 2010 a new diabetic prescription medication, Afrezza is set to be released. After 50 different clinical studies performed on adults, who had either type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes the new medication has been approved by the FDA.
Inhalant Delivery
Afrezza is an inhalant medication, which is good news for diabetics who prefer to avoid the insulin shots that some diabetics must take up to several times a day to manage their diabetes.
How Afrezza Works
Afrezza is a pre-measured powder that comes in an inhaler. Each dose comes in a one-time cartridge that is disposed of after each use. The medication dissolves instantly and delivers the insulin to the blood stream almost immediately.
The insulin reaches its peak within 10 to 14 minutes just as a person without diabetes does. This medication is to be used at mealtimes unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.
This could be great news for diabetics who have difficulty managing their diabetes with other types of medications and therapies.
