The FDA has stepped in and severely restricted the use of the type 2 diabetic medication Avandia. After being pulled off the market and under serious investigation a few times over the course of the past year the FDA has decided that the health risks to diabetics is too great to allow Avandia to be used by all diabetics.
The only diabetics who will be able to continue to use Avandia are those who have tried numerous medications and Avandia is the only medication that has proven to work for them.
A word from the FDA
“The FDA is taking this action today to protect patients, after a careful effort to weigh benefits and risks. We are seeking to strike the right balance to support clinical care.” FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., said. “Patients who are currently taking Avandia and benefiting from them will be able to continue with the same medication if they so wish, the FDA wrote today.” Of course, knowing the risks involved with the medication some may decide to try another medication.
