“The Diabetes Dude” - Raises Diabetes Awareness with Blue Flamingos
“The Diabetes Dude” is a nine year old boy named Noah Brokmeier. Noah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of six. Noah was inspired by a program about diabetes that was given at his school. He decided to do something about raising awareness.
He started by talking about diabetes to anyone who would listen. That is how he became “The Diabetes Dude.” Every time he got an injection of insulin or had his blood sugar checked he put a penny in a jar. When had 22.2 pounds of pennies he donated them to the Children’s Hospital in Boston.
He then decide to spread diabetes awareness and raise more money in a unique way. Blue Flamingos - was launched he choose the color blue because it is the official diabetes awareness color. The flamingo’s all had names that started with a D for diabetes. Family members and friends would then secretly place the blue flamingo’s in the yards of residences and business. Each flamingo had a tag explaining Noah’s fundraising goals.
