Actor Ben Vereen was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2009. The 63 year old actor best known for his Tony award winning role in the Broadway musical “Pippin” partnered with Sanofiaventis Pharmaceuticals to help create the program STAND (Start Taking Action Now for Diabetes.)

Vereen spoke at the Baylor’s Diabetes Heath and Wellness Institute recently and was quoted as saying “My main message is turn it around. We need to stop seeing diabetes as a challenge or something we suffer from, but rather it’s an opportunity to live a better life by taking better care of ourselves.”

The men and woman he spoke to at the event said it was nice to know that not just everyday people have to suffer with diabetes but that celebrities people we look up to are not immune and have such a positive attitude it gives us hope.

Vereen made such an impact on the people he talked to that they were more willing and even showed interest in becoming more aware of their diabetes and raising awareness within their community. Overall, it turned out to be a positive event for everyone involved.
