Traveling with diabetes: Where to find affordable travel insurance

Traveling with diabetes can be inherently challenging: The normal headaches of airports, lost luggage or delays are compounded by certain medical necessities and the need for special adjustments.

Travel insurance can ease some of the worry and stress, as it ensures you can get the treatment or care you need should your diabetes cause problems while taking a domestic or international trip.

Why travel insurance?

Travelers who are concerned about needing medical coverage during trips can benefit from the security of travel insurance. If you needed to be hospitalized or required medication, for example, a travel insurance plan that includes medical coverage could offer these benefits.

Travel insurance can also protect you against unforeseen illnesses, accidents or emergency situations that might arise - whether caused by your diabetes or some other factor.

Diabetes and travel insurance

Having a pre-existing medical condition like diabetes may change what type of travel insurance you can purchase, as well as the cost of that plan.

Many companies give you the option to upgrade to more thorough coverage plans that include better benefits for emergency situations or medical care.

It's also common for companies to offer pre-existing medical condition "waivers," which can help you qualify for cheaper insurance if your condition has been stable and you are medically able to travel at the time you purchase your insurance.

Before purchasing a plan, it's important to understand whether or not the waiver will cover you should you submit claims for medical issues, accidents or illnesses that occurred during your trip.

Some options

When searching for diabetes-related travel insurance options, you can generally find decent coverage under basic medical travel insurance plans.

Rates will vary depending on company and policy - as well as the length of your trip - but you may be able to find plans that cost as little as $5-$10 per day of your trip.

The following websites all offer various options for medical travel insurance:

1. Travel Guard. Includes coverage for international or domestic travel, emergency evacuation plans and 24/7 assistant services.

2. Insure My Trip. Offers coverage for short- and long-term travel, pre-existing conditions and emergency protection.

3. MEDEX. Includes annual frequent traveler program, sports coverage and special trip expenses for companions under 18.

The best way to find the most affordable medical travel insurance plan is to compare rates or speak to a company representative about your options.
