Assess each mouthful

By Joyful Diabetic, Mar 17, 2013

I recently discovered that my consciousness pays close attention to the potential impact of EVERTHING I put in my mouth! This was a revelation. I knew that at meal times I focus and even compute the number of carbohydrates in the upcoming meal. I didn’t realize that I do this mental process with everything I eat…it’s almost an automatic process.
I remember when I got my first insulin pump about 15 years ago. Just wearing a pump heightened my consciousness to paying attention to the carbs I was consuming. My current pump has a wizard that recommends insulin dosage and all I have to do is enter the grams of carbs I’m about to consume. My pump already knows my blood sugar level since my OneTouch meter sends a radio frequency signal to my pump whenever I test. There’s a sophisticated program in my pump that knows when I last took insulin and is thus able to determine the active insulin in my system. In this way, the wizard evaluates my current situation and recommends how much Novolog to pump.
I was not conscious that this thinking process was going on in me too. There are times when I think the pump recommendation is too low or too high. In these cases, I override the pump recommendation with what I know from experience is more appropriate. Doing this over and over has given me much higher consciousness about the potential impact of everything I eat.
For me, this awareness is a source of joy. I’m in very close rapport with my body as we work together to manage my health. The process is working. As proof, my A1C has been consistently below 7 and that’s the recommended goal established by the American Diabetes Association.
