Exercise And Type 2 Diabetes

The importance of exercise for diabetics can not be emphasized enough. It is a vital part of managing the disease. But why is it so important, what types of exercise are best and how often should a diabetic participate in it?

There are so many benefits that be derived from exercise. Circulation problems are a big concern for diabetics. Poor circulation evolves into nerve damage and lower extremities not receiving proper blood flow or oxygen. Over time, the tissue can become irreparably damaged and eventually die altogether. Once the tissue dies, there is no bringing it back and amputation of the affected area is the only recourse.

Improving circulation also distributes much needed vitamins and nutrients throughout the body. It carries oxygen to the brain which increase thinking ability, memory, cognitive skills and overall brain function. Blood flow to major organs is also crucial for their continued operation.

Probably the most important part of exercise for type 2 diabetics is the positive effect that it has on controlling glucose levels. By burning off excess fat and sugar, glucose levels remain normal. At the same time, bad cholesterol levels are being lowered while good cholesterol levels are being raised. Triglyceride levels are also cut by exercise.

But exercise also helps other parts besides the circulatory and cardiovascular systems. Joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles and nerves all benefit from exercise. Keeping the body limber and moving decreases fatigue, improves strength and endurance and generates more energy. It also inspires the individual to get out and enjoy life instead of sitting at home consuming unhealthy snacks.
