With the dramatic increase in new cases of diabetes, there is an increasing need to educate the public, as well as those who are potentially at risk of developing the disease. One of the best ways that someone can assist in this area is to attend a certified diabetes educator course.
When you become a certified diabetes educator, it qualifies you to teach diabetics the best techniques that they can use in order to self-manage their disease. In order to apply for certification, you must be licensed and registered as a health professional. There is a vast number of fields of study that can be utilized for this certification requirement.
The applicant must also complete a rigorous level of educational training which will include a minimum of 1,000 hours of teaching and a minimum of at least 4 hours per week of employment as a diabetes educator. The teachings must be in the field of diabetes, as related fields of study do not qualify.
The certification testing that is used, called the Certified Diabetes Educator Examination, is only available twice a per year, and then only during specific months. There is, of course, a fee associated with taking the examination.
To assist with the information that will be covered in the exam, there is a handbook of sample questions that cover the three main categories of the exam: assessment of diabetes care, diabetes-patient-education program development and administration, and interventions and development of diabetes care plans.
Once you pass the exam, the certification is good for a period of five years. Then you can be well on your way to assisting those individuals who are trying to deal with this disease, its many complications, and how it impacts their lives.
